One day, Vikas Babu, the stationmaster of Lakshmikantapur brought home an unusual pet for his children- a baby crocodile! They named him Haroo. Read to find out what happened as Haroo grew bigger.

Within a few weeks, Haroo became tame and friendly. He did not bare his teeth quite so often. He could see that the family was taking care of him.

Father bought some nylon string, tied it firmly around Haroo's waist and flung him into the railway pond. Mother was delighted. After all, a crocodile's place is in the water.

The news soon spread all over the village that Vikas Babu, the stationmaster, had brought an enormous crocodile from the Sunderbans and kept it in the railway pond so that no one could steal any fish. As a result, no one heard the illegal splash of fishing nets at night anymore. Anglers, who sat on the bank with fishing rods, during the early morning and the quiet afternoon, disappeared as if by magic! Earlier, village girls often used the pond to wash dirt cloths and buffaloes lazed in the water after ploughing the fields. But that too stopped now, without Haroo having to bare his teeth or swish his tail- his very seemed to scare them off!

"Very good" Father said. "Haroo can do a great deal if we can train him. These people have been stealing fish from the pond all this time. At last, we've been able to taste some fish, thanks to Haroo."

Haroo loved the pond. And the children- Shanto, Kanto and Khuku - loved Haroo. They stroked and petted him and fed him tidbits from home. After a few days, Haroo came up from the pond whenever anyone called his name. Staying in the pond suited him and he put on weight steadily. he soon learnt to cross the railway lines and come home on his own. He would lie in the courtyard. lazily basking in the sun.
हारो को तालाब बहुत पसंद था। और बच्चे- शान्तो, कांटो और खुकु - हारो से प्यार करते थे। उन्होंने उसे सहलाते, दुलारते और उसे घर से चोति०मौति स्वादिस्ट खाना खिला देते। कुछ दिनों के बाद, जब भी किसी ने उसका नाम पुकारा, हारो तालाब से ऊपर आ गया। तालाब में रहना उसके अनुकूल था और उसने लगातार वजन बढ़ाया। उन्होंने जल्द ही रेलवे लाइनों को पार करना सीख लिया और अपने घर आ जाता। वह आंगन में लेट जाता और सूरज की रौशनी लेता।
Haroo grew older day by day. He soon set off with Father to the railway station every day. A useless weighting machine had been lying in a corner of the platform for a long time. Haroo would go and lie on it quietly, the whole day.

Vikas Babu had always been strict stationmaster. He did not like it when people travelled without a ticket. But being the only officer in the station, he could not always prevent it.

Only a few passengers bought monthly passes. The railing were broken at the eastern end of the platform and travellers without tickets always chose this end to avoid the stationmaster. One morning, as soon as old man got off the 11:45 a.m. Lakshmikantapur Local and made for the broken railings, Haroo came slithering and caught hold of his dhoti. The panic-stricken made dropped his blunder of rice and bananas in fright and let out a wild scream. He could probably have fainted on the spot had Vikas Babu not come running to see what the noise was all about.

It is difficult to say why Haroo behaved the way did. But Vikas Babu just smiled and said, "Really, Sir, how much longer are you going to travel without a ticket at your age! You'd better start buying tickets from now on, then you can travel without fear. Haroo won't attack you if you have a ticket."

The story spread like wildfire! It gained colour as it travelled. Everyone at the local teashop claimed that if you tried travelling without a ticket, the crocodile would bite chunks off your body!
कहानी जंगल की आग की तरह फैल गई! यात्रियों के द्वारा ये कहानी प्रचालितिक होने लगी। स्थानीय चाय की दुकान पर हर किसी ने दावा किया कि अगर आपने बिना टिकट यात्रा करने की कोशिश की, तो मगरमच्छ आपके शरीर को काट देगा!
Nowadays, there is always a long queue in front of ticket counter, both in the morning and in the evening! In fact, at times Vikas Babu finds it tough to cope with the crowd.
आजकल टिकट काउंटर के सामने हमेशा सुबह और शाम दोनों समय लंबी कतार लगी रहती है! वास्तव में, कई बार विकास बाबू को भीड़ का सामना करना कठिन लगता है।
Something else has also happened, thanks to Haroo. Loafers and crooks have stopped loitering about on the railway platform. Stray dogs, which used to squabble in the station yard, had disappeared. Haroo's presence on the weighting scales has scared them off. The station is so still that one can almost hear the leaves falling!
