Panna Dai was a nursemaid to Udai Singh, the fourth son of Maharana Sangram Singh. She used to look after the young prince, who was the same age as her son. When Uday Singh's uncle tried to kill him, Panna Dai sacrificed the life of her own son to save Udai Singh.

Long ago, there lived a bold and fearless little girlin Bhojla village in Uttar Pradesh. Her parents had died when she was very young and she live with her relatives. She loved to climb trees and swim in the river. She was also a willing worker and could stand long hours of strain and hardship. The villagers liked her for she was good-natured.

Once, when leopard had attacked her, the girl had found in single-handedly and killed it with nothing more than a sturdy stick. After that, she was nicknamed 'Jhalakari', meaning the tigress.

When Jhalakari grew up, she got married to a soldier in the army of Rani Lakshmi and went away to live with him in Jhansi. That was how the Rani chanced to see her one day. "She shall be my companion," the Rani ordered, for she liked the girl's frank and fearless manner. They become good friends and every day the two young women went out riding together. They fenced, wrestled and practised shooting with revolvers and guns.

Those were troubled times and everywhere there were rumours of war. The British had expanded their territory in India. They had a trading company called the East India Company. Its officers ruled the people of the land harshly.

In 1857, fighting broke out all over the country. Everywhere, the people rose in rebellion against the British rulers. The British fought back and thousands of people were killed on both sides.

In March 1858, the British troops attacked the fort at Jhansi. Their heavy guns bombarded it.

The Rani's troops fought back bravely. Among them was Jhalakari. Never once leaving her beloved queen's side, she rode from one point to another, firing at the British soldiers with a steady hand and a sure aim.

The enemy fell back; they had not expected such a strong defence of the fort. The British commander telegraphed for help and more troops came rushing in. But the Rani's army still held on.

When the British found that they could make no progress, they decided to gain entry into the fort at night by stealth. They bribed a man named Dulaji Thakur, who was in charge of the South gate of tha fort.

In return for a large sum of money, Dulaji led them to a spot where there was a break in the wall. At the dead of night, the British soldiers made their way into the fort through it. Jhalakari saw them and sounded the alarm. With loud cries, the Rani's army took up the fight and opened fire and the attackers fall back. The fighter continued for many days. Though the Indian troops were full of daring, they could not withstand the British attacks. The enemy fought their way steadily until they were outside the palace.

Now, the queen's advisers begging her to go out of the fort to a safe place. Though reluctant at first, Rani Lakshmibai agreed in the end. Dressed in armour an carrying a dagger and two revolvers, she rode unrecognised through the enemy lines, down the hillside and out of one of the gates.

Jhalakari went with her for part of the way. As soon as she knew that the Rani was safe, Jhalakari, disguised in Rani Lakhshmibai's clothes and riding her white horse, returned to the fortress. The british soldiers saw her and mistook her for Rani Lakshmibai, just as she had intended them to do. They surrounded her and captured her and then let her to their commander.

The commander looked at the captive closely, but he was not sure at all that she was the queen. "Bring Dulaji," he ordered his soldiers, "Dulaji will know."

When Jhalakari saw Dulaji, her eyes balzed with anger and she shouted."You traitor! You coward! You shameless betrayer of your people!"
जब झलकारी ने दुलजी को देखा, तो उसकी आँखें क्रोध से जल उठीं और वह चिल्लाया "तुम गद्दार हो! तुम कायर हो! बेशर्मी तुमने अपने लोगों के साथ विश्वश्घात किया है!"
The Englishman asked Dulaji, " Is this Rani Lakshmibai?"
अंग्रेज ने दुलजी से पूछा, "क्या यह रानी लक्ष्मीबाई है?"
"It is not,"answered Dulaji. "Do you think it is so easy to capture the Rani?"
"यह नहीं है," दुलजी ने जवाब दिया। "क्या आपको लगता है कि रानी को पकड़ना इतना आसान है?"
The British commander was furious that they had been tricked. He knew that if Jhalakari was allowed to go free, she would be dangerous, so she was sentenced to death by hanging.
ब्रिटिश कमांडर गुस्से में थे कि उन्हें बेवकूफ बनाया गया था। वह जानता था कि अगर झलकारी को आज़ाद होने दिया गया, तो वह खतरनाक होगी, इसलिए उसे फाँसी की सजा सुनाई गई।
"I am not afraid of dying," Jhalakari answered proudly.
"मैं मरने से नहीं डरती," झलकारी ने गर्व से उत्तर दिया।
As they led her to her death, she shouted out to the British, "Beware! You will never conquer us. We will rise again and again and fight back until we win our freedom!"
जैसे ही उन्होंने उसे अपनी मौत के लिए ले जाया गया, उसने चिल्लाते हुए अंग्रेजों से कहा, "खबरदार! तुम हम पर कभी विजय नहीं पाओगे। हम बार-बार उठेंगे और तब तक लड़ेंगे जब तक हम अपनी आजादी नहीं जीत लेते!"
"Silence!" they shouted. But she would not be silenced. As the rope tightened round her neck, she cried out, "Long live India! Long live Lakshmibai! Long live freedom!"
"चुप रहो!" उन लोगों ने चिल्लाया। लेकिन वो चुप नहीं रही। जैसा कि रस्सी ने उसकी गर्दन पे डाली गई, उसने रोते हुए कहा, "भारत अमर रहे! लक्ष्मीबाई अमर रहे! आजादी अमर रहे!"
